Roman Cohort

Roster army: 🛡️ Roman Cohort
A Roman cohort of 480 veteran legionaries with large scutum shields, pila and gladii, drilled in the testudo formation, supported by 2 scorpion bolt-throwers and commanded by hardened centurions.

ROUND 1 — THE ONLY ROUND

Beneath the merciless noon sun, the wolf pack charges across the desert plain in a coordinated flanking surge, only to meet a wall of overlapped scutum shields bristling with pila. The Roman cohort advances in perfect testudo formation, its ranks impenetrable; the scorpion bolts sing out and drop three wolves mid-sprint before they close twenty paces. Those that reach the shield line are met with a perfectly drilled volley of spear-thrusts and gladii work, each wolf collapsing against disciplined steel whilst its packmates hesitate, panicking at the organised slaughter. The alpha's desperate call for a second charge falters as legionaries wheel to flank the stragglers, and within moments the surviving wolves scatter in terror across the burning sands, leaving their fallen behind.

» The alpha flees alone across the desert, its dominion reduced to memory and dust.

THE WAR ORACLE'S VERDICT

This is a decisive Roman victory. Thirty wolves cannot meaningfully harm 480 armoured legionaries in formation. Wolves excel at harrying unarmoured prey and can exploit chaos, but the cohort's discipline, shields and pila ensure the pack faces concentrated missile and melee fire whenever it commits. The desert heat affects both sides, but the Roman force's testudo formation provides mutual support and shade rotation, whilst wolves must charge repeatedly into trained spearpoints. The scorpions will inflict terror and casualties at range. Isolated wolves will be crushed; any wolf that closes to melee dies to gladius and shield. The battle ends with the pack routed or annihilated.

  • Roman discipline and formation discipline prevent chaos
  • Heavy armour renders wolf bites and claws nearly ineffectual
  • Testudo and pila create a lethal kill-zone for any charge
  • Scorpions provide devastating suppressing fire

MVP: The testudo formation's flawless discipline

Thirty wolves lie broken on the scorched plain; the cohort barely bloodied, reforms ranks and marches onward. The desert claims what steel left behind.
