Africanized Honeybee Swarm
A swarm of roughly 2 million Africanized honeybees that pursue anything that disturbs them for hundreds of meters.
Viking Axe Raiders
800 Viking raiders with bearded axes, spears and round shields, wearing mail and leather, led by a vanguard of 60 berserkers who fight without armour or fear.
ROUND 1 — THE ONLY ROUND
Two million Africanized honeybees descend upon the Viking line like a living dust storm, and for a breathless moment the raiders falter—faces blacken with insects, screams erupt from those caught in the open. But the berserkers do not break; they form a wall of overlapped shields, leather-clad and fearless, whilst the mail-armoured rank behind them draw torches and dried grass, smoke billowing across the scorching sand. The bees, already weakened by the murderous noon heat, find their stings useless against mail and helmet, bouncing off like rain; they tire faster than the disciplined Vikings advance, crushing thousands underfoot and sweeping the rest aside with leather gloves and branches, until the swarm, scattered and exhausted, retreats into the shimmering air.
» The last surviving bees flee skyward as the Vikings stand breathing hard in the smoke, their pale skin welted and angry but their formation unbroken.
THE WAR ORACLE'S VERDICT
This is a mismatch in the Vikings' favour despite the bee swarm's enormous numbers. Two million bees sound apocalyptic, but honeybees deal minimal damage to mail-clad warriors: stings penetrate leather and exposed skin, but most of the swarm cannot harm armoured soldiers effectively. A Viking in mail with shield and helmet becomes a near-impenetrable fortress against insects. The bees' main advantage is psychological—unarmoured or lightly-clad troops would panic and rout—but the berserkers are fearless and the regular Vikings disciplined. Under desert noon heat, the swarm might tire; bees overheat and dehydrate. The Vikings will suffer stings on exposed areas (faces, hands, wrists), which is painful and could cause some casualties, but the formation can advance, huddle together with shields overlapped, and systematically kill bees by crushing, swatting and smoke (if they carry torches or dried grass). The bees lack tactics; they swarm indiscriminately and exhaust themselves. Given the extreme armour advantage and the Vikings' cohesion, the raiders will prevail, though with meaningful casualties (perhaps 50–100 killed or incapacitated by bee venom).
- mail armour neutralises bee venom on torso and limbs
- bees tire quickly in desert heat; Vikings have discipline and formation
- bee swarm lacks coordination or concentration of force
- berserkers' fearlessness prevents panic rout
MVP: Berserker vanguard's fearless shield wall
Eighty-three raiders lay dead or comatose from venom; twice that number bore painful stings that would scar. The desert fell silent but for the distant hum of the retreating swarm.
