Elephant Archer Warband
12 armoured war elephants, each carrying a howdah with 3 archers, escorted by 100 skirmishers with javelins.
M4 Sherman Tank
One WWII M4 Sherman tank with a 5-man crew, a 75mm gun with 40 shells and two machine guns. It cannot refuel and the crew must eventually rest.
ROUND 1 — THE ONLY ROUND
As twilight bleeds across the rolling hills, the Sherman's engine roars to life on the ridge, and the gunner acquires the lead war elephant in his sight picture—a magnificent beast adorned in brass and crimson, its howdah bristling with bows. The first 75mm round cracks the dusk like thunder, and the elephant crumples mid-stride, its screams cutting through the din as the skirmishers break formation and scatter in panic. The tank pivots smoothly, coaxial machine-gun fire stitching a terrible line through the javelin-throwers whilst the remaining elephants wheel about in confusion, their handlers fighting for control as a second and third shell finds their marks. By the time the smoke clears and the skirmishers are in full rout, the warband's pride lies smoking across the hillside, and the Sherman sits unmolested in the gathering dark, barely a scratch upon its hull.
» The last elephant driver, realising the futility of his charge, turns his beast away into the shadows and vanishes into history.
THE WAR ORACLE'S VERDICT
The Sherman's 75mm gun can reliably penetrate and kill war elephants at any range beyond javelin throw. Forty shells at 12 elephants is more than enough; the tank can methodically eliminate the elephant corps in the opening engagement, using speed and armour to evade the skirmishers' javelins. Machine-gun fire will suppress and scatter javelin troops. The elephants have no answer to a mobile armoured platform with superior firepower. However, if the tank suffers a mechanical failure, gets bogged, or the crew is exhausted and makes a critical error, the elephants could close the gap and overwhelm it. Under normal conditions, the Sherman wins decisively.
- Firepower gap is insurmountable: one 75mm shell kills an elephant
- Tank armour defeats arrows and javelins at distance
- Sherman mobility allows hit-and-run tactics
- Elephants are slow, large targets; limited return fire threat
MVP: The 75mm gun—a most efficient killer.
The warband is annihilated; fewer than thirty skirmishers limp back to their encampment bearing tales of thunder and metal that no arrow could pierce. The Sherman's crew claim the hills before nightfall, their victory absolute and their ammunition nearly untouched.
