The Carnage of Kjallar Pass
Battlefield: a narrow mountain pass · 7 Oct 2026 · Ranked
Viking Raider Host
800 Viking raiders with bearded axes, spears and round shields, wearing mail and leather, led by a vanguard of 60 berserkers who fight without armour or fear.
Medieval Knight Phalanx
150 heavily armoured knights in full plate on barded warhorses with lances and longswords, supported by 300 crossbowmen behind large pavise shields.
ROUND 1 OF 3
The crossbowmen loose their first volley into the Viking advance, and two dozen raiders crumple into the snow—but the berserkers barely slow, howling their battle-cry and charging directly at the hail of bolts. The phalanx wheels to present their lances as the mounted knights realise they have no room to manoeuvre; the pass is barely fifty paces wide, and the enemy numbers are already flooding in from both flanks.
ROUND 2 OF 3
Steel meets flesh in the grinding press as naked berserkers slam into plate-armoured knights, trading limbs for seconds gained as the crossbowmen continue their merciless work above the melee. But for every Viking that falls, three more squeeze through the bottleneck, and the knights' formation begins to collapse under the sheer weight of bodies; the pass that was meant to be their fortress becomes a tomb.
ROUND 3 OF 3
A roar rises from the Viking rear-guard as fresh raiders pour over the ridge above, showering javelin and stone upon the trapped cavalry; the knights, armoured and magnificent moments before, find themselves drowning in a sea of bearded axes and savage purpose. The last crossbowman's bolt finds its mark, but it matters not—the phalanx is broken, the pass choked with the dying and the desperate.
» The final knight is dragged screaming from his horse and run through by six spear-points, his gleaming armour worth less than the breath beneath it.
THE WAR ORACLE'S VERDICT
The narrow mountain pass fundamentally undermines Player 1's cavalry advantage; knights cannot charge effectively or manoeuvre, reducing them to heavy infantry. Player 2's numerical superiority (nearly 2:1) becomes decisive in a grinding melee within confined space. However, Player 1's crossbowmen will initially dominate the approach, potentially culling 100+ Vikings before melee is joined. The berserkers' fearlessness and lack of armour make them vulnerable to bolts, but once contact is made, Player 1's heavier armour and superior training will inflict disproportionate casualties. The decisive moment arrives when the press of 800 bodies overwhelms 150 knights; sheer attrition favours the Vikings, and a routing cavalry unit becomes trapped and slaughtered in the pass.
- Narrow terrain eliminates cavalry mobility, negating Player 1's primary advantage
- 2:1 numerical superiority gives Vikings overwhelming attrition advantage in a static melee
- Crossbowmen buy time but cannot prevent massed Viking assault
- Viking berserkers absorb initial casualties but drive breakthrough once mêlée contact is made
MVP: The fearless berserkers, wedge of fury
The mountain pass runs red with noble blood, and nearly four hundred Vikings lie among the fallen, but the remaining host marches onward toward the lowlands with the fury of the unconquerable still burning in their eyes.
