The Frozen Volley
Battlefield: a frozen tundra in light snow · 7 Oct 2026 · Ranked
English Longbow Line
500 English longbowmen firing 10 arrows a minute from behind a line of sharpened wooden stakes, protected by 100 dismounted men-at-arms in plate armour.
Battle Mages Contingent
12 battle mages in robes who hurl fireballs and lightning bolts and can raise brief magical shields, but tire quickly and wear no armour.
ROUND 1 OF 4
The Battle Mages Contingent advances across the glittering snow, their robes trailing frost-laden wind as they begin weaving incantations. The English Longbow Line responds with a thunderous release—five hundred bowstrings snap as one, and the sky darkens with a shaft-cloud so dense it seems to swallow the daylight. Three mages crumple in the white, their shields shattered; the remaining nine throw up shimmering barriers, but the effort drains them visibly.
ROUND 2 OF 4
Two mages hurl a combined firestorm at the dismounted men-at-arms, orange flame blooming across the frozen tundra and blackening a section of the stake line. Twenty armoured soldiers fall, their plate glowing cherry-red. But before the mages can draw breath, another volley—and another—catches two more mid-spell, their final incantations dying unfinished in their throats as arrows find the gaps in their robes.
ROUND 3 OF 4
The remaining seven mages sprint desperately toward the English line, hoping to reach melee range where their magic might matter. The archers adjust their aim with mechanical precision, and the tundra becomes a corridor of fletched death; a mage every three seconds drops into the snow, blood steaming in the cold air. Those few who press forward meet a wall of plate armour and longswords.
ROUND 4 OF 4
The last two surviving mages conjure one final, desperate lightning strike at the massed archers, and it catches thirty soldiers in its stuttering blue arc. But their shields flicker and fail—exhaustion and repeated arrow strikes have spent their reserves entirely. As they stumble, defenceless, the English Longbow Line draws one last, merciless volley.
» The final mage falls silent upon the snow, bristling with English shafts like a porcupine, as the victorious archers lower their bows and the smoke of magic fades into the frozen air.
THE WAR ORACLE'S VERDICT
The mages have impressive firepower but face an overwhelming volume of covering fire from 500 coordinated archers. A single volley of arrows from that formation is nearly impossible to fully shield against; magical shields tire the mages rapidly. The mages' best hope is to close distance and target the plate-armoured men-at-arms, but the English archers can rain death on any exposed approach across the frozen tundra's open ground. Even if a mage reaches melee range, it is unarmoured against disciplined heavy infantry in full plate. The mages will exhaust their magical reserves long before inflicting significant casualties on a fortified formation of 600 disciplined soldiers.
- Arrow volume (5,000 per minute) overwhelms magical shields
- Mages unarmoured; a single arrow is lethal
- Open terrain offers no cover for mages to advance
- Magical fatigue sets in before reaching the line
MVP: The English Longbow Line's merciless volley discipline.
Twelve robed bodies cooling in the drifts; the English line reformed and barely blooded. The tundra had become a mage's grave, and no spell cast in desperation could have changed the arithmetic of five hundred arrows against twelve isolated conjurers.
